Odu Obara Meji is the specialist doctor within the pantheon of the Odus. In the beginning when OBA OLOFIN was the king and Orunmila was his personal babalawo, the king became blind and lame. Orunmila consulted all the Orisa Odu to ask who has knowledge about healing the King’s afflictions. None of the Odus had the answer.
What OLODUMARE had already given to Orunmila was for open wounds and infections, so Orunmila left ILE - AYE to ORUN to go and beseech OLODUMARE for help and knowledge about healing OLOFIN the king of ILE-AYE. During the period that the king was sick and Orunmila went to Orun, the whole land was in turmoil because the king could not perform his duties and there was no law and order.
OLODUMARE now told Orunmila to return to ILE-AYE and that he would send the remedy to him in the form of a human being. So Orunmila returned to ILE-AYE and the sick king. He did another reading and OBARA MEJI came up which was a new Orisa Odu to him, so he was directed to go to the crossroad of Aye and Orun with the king. At the crossroad, they met a male and a female being. The two beings asked Orunmila what he was looking for and Orunmila explained that he was directed by ODU OBARA MEJI to come there in search of the cure for the sick king. The two beings said to Orunmila that they are OBARA MEJI and they are the cure for the king’s ailments, but the king has to buy them for himself as servants in his house for him to be cured. So, the king put all his money at the crossroad of AYE and ORUN and the two beings followed them home.
When the king slept, the two beings consulted Orunmila and together they prepared a special soap with a leaf called EWE OYIYA and used it on the king. When AJALAYE woke up, his sight had been restored and he could walk too. So the two beings fused together and became IYERE-OSUN, the male and female essence of the Ifa reading power. OBARA MEJI is translated in Yoruba language as " The king bought two"; "OBA" means King,"RA" means buy, "MEJI" means two. Aboru Aboye nile Ifa!.
