The Benefits of Meditation

In his 1963 book entitled, The Science of Being and Art of Living, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi gives us great insight into the wisdom of meditation as a daily practice. In defining BEING, he states,

BEING is Life, It is existence. To be is to live, to exist. Being or existence finds expression in the different aspects of living: thinking, speaking, doing, experiencing, feeling. All aspects of life have their basis in Being.

He goes on to state:

Experience shows that the Being is the essential, basic nature of the mind; but since it commonly remains in tune with the senses projecting outwards toward the manifested realms of creation, the mind misses or fails to appreciate its own essential nature, just as the eyes are unable to see themselves. Everything but the eyes themselves can be seen through the eyes. Similarly, everything is based on the essential nature of the mind, the omnipresent Being, and yet, while the mind is engaged in the projected field of manifested diversity, the Being is not appreciated by the mind, although It is its very basis and essential constituent. Because It is at the root of everything, It is, as it were, supporting the existence of life and the creation and not exposing Itself. The great dignity, the freat splendor and grandeur of Its innocent, almighty, omnipresent nature, is present in man as the basis of ego, intellect, mind, senses, body, and surroundings. But It is not obvious; It underlies all creation.

africanmeditationMany people approach meditation seeking an experience. And it is that very process of seeking, the experience of anticipation, that fills their mind and blocks it from simply Being. How often we hear beginners say, I sat there for about 10 minutes, but nothing happened. To allow your Ori (Awareness) to expand to the level of Universal Consciousness is to bypass anticipatory experience. To allow the mind to seek its center, is to draw the Mind into the process of Being so that it may gravitate to Ori (Awareness). The Knowing that comes through to you during periods of meditation does not necessarily come through the cognitive processes of the Mind. Nor does it necessarily come with flashing lights and images of metaphysical beings. Consider how much goes on both physically and mentally while we are sleeping and yet we are unaware of the magical processes that are taking place. The state of BEING is the nature of the Mind. Mind moves away from its center in order to pay attention to the world. The purpose of meditation is to give the Mind an opportunity to gravitate to its center where cognitive consciousness becomes intuitive awareness. Where the manifest is experienced in terms of the Unseen Forces that are the Light Behind The Veil, the Ideal that supports the real.
